Medford

Those who've listened to The Hobo Song on Give Us a Song have heard me tell about my grandmother-in-law, Lillie Rosebery, and about the hobos who always found their way to her house. Listen carefully and you can hear a little more of the story at the end of the CD's title track.

Debbie and I went through Medford on our way home from Oklahoma City, and we brought back a few images to share.

The grain elevator is probably where hobos hopped off the train there at Medford, Oklahoma.

They'd walk up this alley.

And find their way to where Miss Lillie's back door used to be. It's now a parking lot for the Methodists.

This is First Christian Church, where Lillie went to worship.

And where you have tracks, you're likely to find a hobo.

World Championship Barbecue

A short 290-mile drive from Indianapolis is Super Smokers BBQ, and I'd say it's worth the trip. We were passing through Eureka, Missouri, and it was one of those serendipitous stops on a road trip: "Let's get off here and see what there is."

This is not your everyday run-of-the-mill barbecue joint. These folks are world champions. That's right. They went to the Super Bowl of Swine, the Memphis in May Festival Barbecue Cookoff, and they won the thing.

How many sauces are enough? We had our choice of six, everything from a Carolina mustard-based sauce to a sweet and smoky Kansas City sauce. They had Texas boucoups hot sauce, and if you like your sweet with a little spicy to it, they've got the Tennessee sauce. I think I detected just a hint of molasses in the Championship sauce.

Okay, maybe it's not a day trip from Indy, but if your travels take you on the road between St. Louis and Springfield, treat your taste buds to Super Smokers. Oh, but if you stop by on Sunday, they'll be closed.
