World Championship Barbecue

A short 290-mile drive from Indianapolis is Super Smokers BBQ, and I'd say it's worth the trip. We were passing through Eureka, Missouri, and it was one of those serendipitous stops on a road trip: "Let's get off here and see what there is."

This is not your everyday run-of-the-mill barbecue joint. These folks are world champions. That's right. They went to the Super Bowl of Swine, the Memphis in May Festival Barbecue Cookoff, and they won the thing.

How many sauces are enough? We had our choice of six, everything from a Carolina mustard-based sauce to a sweet and smoky Kansas City sauce. They had Texas boucoups hot sauce, and if you like your sweet with a little spicy to it, they've got the Tennessee sauce. I think I detected just a hint of molasses in the Championship sauce.

Okay, maybe it's not a day trip from Indy, but if your travels take you on the road between St. Louis and Springfield, treat your taste buds to Super Smokers. Oh, but if you stop by on Sunday, they'll be closed.
